| Abstract | This report discusses the capabilities of a computer program called the Detroit Metropolitan Area Data System (DMADS) which was developed to make it possible to manipulate and analyze data from the U.S. census. At the present time the DMADS can be used to generate statistical data and maps of the seven county Detroit area. DMADS contains 2500 items of information, or variables, for each census tract. Some of the information stored in DMADS are ethnic data. These data describe the housing and economic and social characteristics of each tract. Other kinds of ethnic information contained in the system include country of origin of the various groups and mother tongue data. Information on numbers of people of Spanish origin and data on year of immigration can also be obtained from DMADS. The computer can manipulate the variables statistically (but not cross-tabulate them) and combine them to form new variables and map them at various scales. Other topics discussed in the document are limitations of the census data and how the public can access the DMADS. Examples of contour maps from DMADS accompanied by interpretive notes are included in this document. (Author/RM) |
